SIT. WRITE. HERE: 6 Mindfulness Practices to Help You Write More and Suffer Less by April Davila is not your typical craft book
.
It is a writer’s wellness book that delivers.
One practice that caught my attention and will stay with me is to use my writing as my anchor. In meditation, I’m familiar with returning to my breath as my anchor when I lose focus or my attention wanders.
The author recommends practicing mindfulness meditation before beginning a writing session, then transitioning into using our actual writing as the anchor to bring us back to our work when our attention wanders.
All of our writing sessions become meditation. When we notice we have lost focus, we simply return to the anchor, to our writing itself.
This is a powerful, effective practice. This is flow.
I am recommending this book and its practices to everyone in the wonderful writing community I belong to at AWritingRoom.com.
It will improve the lives of writers by helping us to be more mindful, more peaceful, more creative.
We can be in flow far more often.
We can build the muscles of resilience and discernment regarding critique, utilizing what we agree with intuitively, and disregarding the rest. We don’t need to be devastated by feedback because we will learn that we are writers; we are not our work. That is an important lesson in the writing life.
The principles and practices taught here are important and empowering. I’ll be referring to it throughout the entirety of my writing life.
I hope it is transformative for you too. Let me know what you think.
Wishing you wonderful writing sessions ahead.
